thepresentation toPopeFrancisofaportrait
ofHisHolinesspaintedbyChinese-born
Australianartist, Jiawei Shen.
ACUwas invitedby theAustralianEmbassy to
theHolySee tosponsor theportraitproject,
including travel toRome forMrShenandhis
wifeMsLanWang, for thepresentationheld
in theCasaSantaMartawherePopeFrancis
currently resides.
The life-sizepaintingdepicts theHolyFather
againstabackdropofpeople fromallnations,
andofallages,with theirhandsclasped in
prayer.Theportraitalso featuresadoveabout to
alighton thePontiff’sshoulder,andanAustralian
parroton theshoulderofayounggirl.
Jiawei Shenarrived inAustraliaasa refugee
in1989, andsurvivedbysketching tourists in
DarlingHarbour.He isnowoneofAustralia’s
most respectedartists, andhispaintingshave
beenexhibitedat theGuggenheimMuseum in
NewYorkandgalleriesacrossAustralia.
HisportraitofStMaryof theCrossMacKillop
wonhim$25,000andamedal fromPope
JohnPaul II in1995, andaprinthangs in the
Australianembassy inRome.
Theportraitpresentationcoincidedwith the
celebrationofmore than fourdecadesof
diplomatic relationsbetweenAustraliaand
theHolySee. Itwasalsoattendedby the
Presidentof theAustralianSenate, Senator the
Honourable JohnHogg,HisEminenceGeorge
CardinalPellDDACandHisExcellency John
McCarthy, KCSG,Australia’sAmbassador to the
HolySee.
