Social and Cultural Contexts of Development and Learning

This unit explores the role of schooling in the society including the aims of Catholic schooling and the diverse social, cultural, ethnic and religious contexts of schooling. Students will explore the way in which these factors affect learning and impact on the identity of both school systems and individuals within these systems. this unit examines theories of learning and teaching in the context of questioning the role of education to assist teacher education students to understand human development and the impact of student’s characteristics and frames of reference.

Particular emphasis is placed on the learner, the teacher and their interrelationships. a primary goal is for students to reflect and revise their own theories of learning. they will examine and compare the processes of how others learn. this in turn will assist in developing strategies to help their students become more effective learners.

This unit is designed to enhance a greater understanding of the teacher’s role in creating effective class and school learning environments. this unit will take an approach familiarizing students with the many ways technology can contribute to learning and instruction.
The webct course (http://acuonline.acu.edu.au) for this unit will be constructed for students to use as a resource to form their own learning communities whilst studying teaching, learning, and development at ACU National.
