Language and Literacy


This unit focuses on the theory and pedagogy of language and literacy education in primary classrooms. Students will examine different theories of language and reading and understand how to apply a variety of practices to suit the needs of diverse learners. Students will study critical literacy and the writing process and the way language structures are used to construct meaning in different text types. Through studying a variety of literary, non-literary, media and multi-modal texts, students will examine a range of principles and practices which apply to teaching speaking, listening, viewing, reading and writing skills. It also focuses on approaches to planning, teaching and evaluating units of work which implement relevant syllabus documents.
