This program is a response to the demands of current TESOL practitioners and the changing nature of education in general. The course aims to develop knowledge, skills and strategies for practitioners engaged in the area of Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language.

Overview

The program will:

  • provide candidates with a variety of perspectives, theories and concepts on second language acquisition;
  • assist candidates to widen their understanding of the nexus between first and second language learning and teaching;
  • help candidates explore and develop a praxis between theory and practice within the field of TESOL;
  • encourage candidates to develop and apply strategies and teachings appropriate for the teaching of English as a Second Language;
  • assist candidates to develop curricula for specific TESOL situations providing candidates with an opportunity to review their understanding of the changing nature of TESOL within a global context;
  • challenge candidates to review and critique current language policies and practices at school, state and national levels.

Mode of Study

This course is offered by evening attendance.

Admission

Application should be made on the Direct Entry Application Form available on the ACU National website, www.acu.edu.au/forms.cfm or from the Student Centre. Direct Entry Application Forms, together with any supporting documentation, should be submitted to the ACU National Admissions Section.

Applicants normally require a Bachelor of Education or equivalent, or a first degree in an area other than Education and an award in professional education. It is likely that the backgrounds of candidates will vary considerably. Religious belief is not a criterion for entry.

Special Admission

Applicants whose educational qualifications do not satisfy the requirements for admission to the course but who have a sound and sufficient basis for application supported by documentation may be granted admission if they satisfy special admission criteria determined by the Academic Board.

Credit

Credit may be given, at the discretion of the School Committee, for studies completed at another institution at the Master's level. Credit may also be given for completion of non-award programs, provided that the programs are conducted at a suitable level over a suitable length of time, are led by appropriately qualified leaders, and that assessment requirements are satisfied. Credit must be applied for when enrolling in the course and be accompanied by relevant documentation.

Research

This is an introduction into the research basis of education. This unit must be completed before a minor thesis is commenced.

EDFD632 Reading and Interpreting Research in Education

Minor Thesis

Worth 30 credit points, this unit is studied individually with a supervisor.

EDCU609 Minor Thesis

Requirements for Completion of Award

Satisfactory completion of:

  • 4 core units plus the 4 elective units; or
  • 4 core units plus the research unit and a minor thesis.

Total of 80 credit points.
