Pass Course

The Bachelor of Environmental Science course aims to:

  • provide students with an understanding of science and scientific method;
  • provide students with theoretical insights and practical competencies in the major areas of environmental science;
  • meet the needs of students for a competitive professional preparation for a career in environmental science;
  • foster in students an awareness of the value of service to the community;
  • prepare graduates who are committed to the highest ethical standards in the practice of their profession.

Recommended Studies: 2-unit Mathematics. In addition, students must meet the general requirements listed in the UAC Guide for their year of entry in one of the categories: Australian Secondary Studies, Special Admission, Overseas Qualifications, International Fee Paying Applicants. Students must also meet ACU National's English language requirements and are selected in competition with other eligible applicants in their admission category.

Course Structure

Requirements for Completion of Pass Award

Students are required to complete a total of 24 units (240 credit points):

·       12 units of Environmental Science;               120cp

·       11 core Science units in Biology;                    120cp

·       1 Volunteer Experiance Unit;                                 0cp

·       1 Field Experiance Unit.                                              0cp

Total                                                                                                               240cp

Two weeks of the course additional to the lecture weeks are allocated to compulsory excursions. The other requirements of the course are that 15 days of Volunteer Experience are completed by the end of Year 2 and 15 days of Field Experience by the end of Year 3.

Professional Recognition

Graduates and students enrolled in the Bachelor of Environmental Science will be eligible for the appropriate category of membership of the Environment Institute of Australia. Graduates who undertake a Graduate Diploma in Education are accredited to teach Secondary Science in NSW schools.

Honours Program

The Honours program prepares students for postgraduate study and eventual research-oriented careers in environmental science industries. The program combines instruction in research methods and the presentation of a research thesis in a specialist environmental science field, with course work at an advanced level, and the opportunity for further field experience in the industry.

The Honours program prepares students for postgraduate study and eventual research-oriented careers in environmental science industries. First Class Honours                                       85 - 100

The course is offered on-campus, normally full-time.

Admission

In order to qualify for admission to the Honours course a student shall normally:

  • have completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Environmental Science Pass degree or equivalent, normally within the previous 5 years;
  • have gained at least a credit average (or equivalent) across units of the entire Pass degree including at least 4 of the units in the major sequence of the discipline in which the Honours program will be undertaken.

In exceptional circumstances an individual not fulfilling these requirements may apply to the School Committee through the relevant Head of School for entry into the Honours course.

Requirements for Completion of Honours Award

Completion of 80cp in academic studies as prescribed hereunder (in addition to satisfying the requirements of the Pass degree):

  • 1 unit in research methods (10cp);
  • Honours Thesis (50cp);
  • EITHER 1 unit of advanced field experience (10cp) AND 1 unit of Cross-Institutional enrolment (at 300 or 400 level) (10cp) OR 2 Cross-Institutional units (at 300 or 400 level) (20cp).
