Professional Midwifery Contexts

This unit provides students with opportunities to explore the history and culture of midwifery. This unit examines the context of midwifery practice in Australia and internationally, in a range of settings, including the role and functions of the midwife and the issues surrounding midwifery services. Students will also be offered opportunities to increase their knowledge and understanding of the various models of health care and the implications of these models on midwifery practice. Ethico-legal issues will be evaluated in relation to childbirth and midwifery practice. The professional obligations of the midwife will be explored and debated.
