The Nature and Development of Language

This unit is intended to introduce students to the systematic study of language - its nature, its uses and its structures and to children's language development. Particular emphasis will be given to theories of language development as they relate to the negotiation of meaning between individuals, and between children and their caregivers. It will also consider the processes of reading and writing and the specific texts and genres required in an academic context. Students will develop practical skills for observing, describing and analysing language in particular socio-cultural contexts.
