Science in a Changing Society


Prerequisites 1 Science Studies unit at introductory (100) level (that is, either BIOL111 Human Systems OR PHYS102 Natural Systems).


Teaching Organisation Lectures, seminars, tutorials and field excursions.
Examination of philosophical differences between scientific methodologies and the humanities. Analysis of the interrelationship between science and society of a selected scientific development, such as Darwin’s theory or Computers; effect of political and economic decisions upon scientific developments; examination of the use of technology in society, for example, medicine, leisure industry; current issues in science, for example, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, drugs in sport; future possibilities and projections, for example, environmental science, movement studies; evaluating information reported as ‘science’ in the popular media; critical evaluation of the effect of technology on performance.
