Biotechnology


Prerequisites 1 Science Studies unit at introductory (100) level (that is, either BIOL111 Human Systems OR PHYS102 Natural Systems).

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, laboratory sessions and tutorials.

The following areas will be explored: molecular and cellular genetics (for example, RNA and protein synthesis, cell division); microbiology (culturing, infection control, immunisation); history of biotechnology, uses of biotechnology (fermentation technology, genetic engineering, mutagens in the environment); a comparison of ‘natural’ and ‘human’ evolution, biotechnological techniques and procedures; risks and uncertainties (toxicology and quarantine testing procedures); bioethics.
