Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week of lectures and 2 hours per week in laboratory for 12 weeks or equivalent.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF PSYCHOLOGY Introduction to the history of psychology, its major theoretical perspectives and their underlying assumptions. Biological bases of behaviour, including sensation, perception, and states of consciousness. Theories and processes of learning, memory, thought, language, and creativity.

INTRODUCTION TO QUANTITATIVE METHODS Introduction to methods of studying behaviour; qualitative and quantitative approaches; principles of measurement; scales of measurement. Methods of organising data. Elementary descriptive statistics: measures and concepts of central tendency, variability, variance, standard deviation, error in measurement, and standard error.
