Problem-Solving for Managers

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

Information and skills required to solve real problems in the world of management responsibility are so diverse and changing so rapidly that it is impossible within the confines of any single course to provide students with all the knowledge and discipline skills that they will need to solve organisational problems. Yet problem-solving and decision-making are at the centre of management work. This unit is designed to help students develop the skills and attitudes necessary to build confidence in solving problems. To provide students with the skills necessary to solve "real" as opposed to "perceived" problems, they need to be provided with an experience in which they can explore and develop their own thinking and problem-solving skills. By so doing they will learn how to think for themselves, analyse problems, gather relevant information, generate solution hypotheses, make informed judgments on the basis of these hypotheses, consider the information available and the ethical values involved, and communicate the conclusions effectively.
