Organisational Behaviour

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

This unit examines the ways in which an understanding of organisational behaviour is necessary to, and facilitates the management of, people at work. Organisations are examined as dynamic systems. There are three levels of analysis the individual, the group, and the organisation as an entity. The focus is on the internal dynamics of organisations or a "micro level" perspective, although some attention is also given to the "macro" perspective on the role of organisations in the broader social, political and economic environment. The intellectual underpinnings of this unit are based on findings from the behavioural sciences in particular psychology, sociology, anthropology and political science. The study, however, is from a management perspective and consideration is given throughout to issues of efficiency and effectiveness in organisations in both the private and public sectors. Ethical issues that arise in managing organisations will also be considered.
