Overview

The postgraduate courses in secondary teacher education at Australian Catholic University have been developed in response to the increasing demands for professional training in education. The courses facilitate, within a Catholic Christian tradition, the development of reflective, educated, culturally aware and responsive individuals, able to function effectively as beginning teachers in a variety of settings and committed to their continuing professional development.

The characteristics which distinguish this course from similar courses of secondary teacher pre-service preparation are its location in a specifically Catholic institution and the provision of studies for students seeking accreditation to teach in Catholic schools. In New South Wales, students who complete Religious Education Curriculum & Teaching 1 and Religious Education Curriculum & Teaching 2 and the units Biblical Studies and Foundations of Christian Faith are eligible for the additional award of the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education.

Professional Practice/Field Experience

Professional Practice/Field Experience covers all school and community-based experiences designed to help students develop professional competence and personal commitment, in accordance with the expressed Catholic philosophy of the university. The theoretical and methodological components of the program need practical application in a classroom setting in order to be refined and consolidated. To develop such application a developmental approach to practical experience is linked with students' expanding knowledge. The Professional Practice/Field Experience units, apply skills, techniques and processes taught in the Foundations Studies and Professional Studies units.
